Kwrite: 'backup' files

Using Kwrite (4.5.4) under KDE 3.5.4 to edit an index.html file, I find that
after saving the result I end up with 2 files on disk:

index.html
index.html~

and the 'properties' of the latter say it is a 'backup' file.

There seems to be no mention of this in the help info.

Anyone know why the backup file is being left on disk
(and how to prevent that)?

Same with Kate it seems. But I haven't noticed this on earlier occasions.
